03/30/2010: "I Want to Hold You In My Arms Like a Spanish Guitar"
When my friend Kristin took her son to the theatre, he turned to her and said, "They made this just for us!"
She told me this tonight while we were waiting to hear a performance by guitarist Manuel Gonzalez at Palau de la Musica in Barcelona.
It's the feeling I have every time I go to see a live performance. There is an expectancy, an anticipation, as we wait for the performers to step out of the wings and onto the stage.
Palau de la Musica in Barcelona is one of the finest concert halls in the world and Gonzalez is a master of his instrument. He took my breath away.
Before the concert we ate tapas (fish, sausage, ham, cheese and spanish omelette) with cava (Spanish champagne) in the small and ancient El Bitxo, while old Spanish men flirted with us from the bar.
Afterwards we strolled home through the narrow streets of the old city, along remnants of the Roman wall, to the apartment we have rented for our stay.
Now I am trying to sleep, but my mind is playing "I want to hold you in my arms like a Spanish guitar" and the full erotic message of the song is suddenly clear. I distract myself by writing this blog. Morning will come early tomorrow.
Three morals in this story:
1. Artist and audience conjure a world between them, and hold it in existence for as long as they both believe.
2. Spanish guitar is an erotic art form.
3. Tapas taste better with champagne.
Yours with creativity and imagination,
Darlene
